On October 28, a number of federal agencies (FBI, HHS, CISA) issued Alert (AA20-302A) “Ransomware Activity Targeting the Healthcare and Public Health Sector.”
When initially introduced to a system, ransomware scans to discover critical services. Then, the attacker can encrypt that data at any time. A ransom is demanded, and the nightmare begins.
That warning has since become reality. Several hospitals have already suffered cyber attacks in Vermont, New York, Ohio, Michigan, California, and many other states.
Ransomware attacks can be extremely costly and even lead to lost lives in a hospital setting as critical medical information is denied to doctors.
To prevent ransomware, you can:
1. Keep your systems patched
2. Segment the Network
3. Establish Managed Detection and Response (MDR)
Mazars has helped 50 hospitals and other healthcare providers improve their defenses against ransomware or removed ransomware from their systems. We can improve your security footing and help you in the event of an attack
